Romanian Art at MCK

Curator Monika Rydygier guided us through an inspiring exhibition, “Laughing with One Eye, Crying with the Other,” featuring works from the Ovidiu Şandor collection. Presented in partnership with the Romanian Cultural Institute in Warsaw, the show paints a vivid picture of Romanian art, exploring how its styles and themes have evolved alongside the country’s turbulent history. The diverse selection of works ranged from bold formal experiments to pieces deeply shaped by political oppression. The exhibition tells a powerful story of freedom and constraint, absurdity and endurance, which still echoes strongly in today’s art scene.
